DECLO

BY
MAYOR JAY DARRINGTON

It is a pleasure for me to make a few comments about the City of Declo and Declo Days. Last Saturday, July 10th we had our annual Declo Day celebration. On the second Saturday of July every year, we come together as a community to have fun and to bring together all the different organizations and clubs working for the good of the community.

We have many people that make this happen. The City employees spend the first part of the summer getting the city painted and cleaned up for this one special day. A Declo Day committee works many long hours planning the activities. Declo is a small community; however, everyone comes together to make this a special and fun day. We have many class reunions on Friday and Saturday nights during this time.

We have a 5/10K run in the morning at the same time as the community Alumni breakfast. Over the years this run has increased, attracting experienced and inexperienced runners alike. Our parade is the next event. Many people line the main street (the only one in town) for our parade. It is short and sweet,
sometimes dubbed “the candy parade.” There are marching and dancing groups from Declo High School
and from community dance studios. There are also some floats. We have a lot of people attend the parade,
not only Declo citizens but also members from surrounding communities. Many people who grew up in
Declo come home for a visit on this weekend just to go to Declo Days. The rest of the day is spent at the
city park with games, food, and a program for the kids. This year we had a hypnotist who put on a great
show; no one will forget the Shania Twain impersonation! The Declo Lions Club has their famous
barbecue for the noon meal.

The park is filled with people having a good time and just getting to know each other and enjoying each others’ company. The celebration ends about 2:30 P.M. with the closing activities. The final park activity is a raffle organized by the Lion’s Club. Many local merchants donate the prizes. This year the Declo Booster Club sponsored a 3-on-3 basketball tournament with 24 teams participating.

We will continue to make improvements in the city and the celebration as time moves on. Our next major project is get play ground equipment for the City Park. The community of Declo has great schools and people that help each other and look out for each other—these are what make it a great place
to live and work.
