BURLEY – Leslie Trevino and DonnaMae Harper may not have realized just what they were getting themselves into when they volunteered to direct the Mt. Harrison Heritage Foundation’s showing of the Rogers and Hammerstein production, “The Sound of Music,” and with just two weeks until opening curtain, they are a little frenzied, but very excited.
The pair has worked since the end of October with more than 70 people to put the production which will begin Friday, January 20, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. The play will show Jan. 20, 21, 23, 26, 26, at 7:30 p.m. and on Jan 28, at 2 p.m.
“It’s amazing how this came together,” Trevino said.
“I was sitting at home thinking that there had to be something I could do with my life, and the next day, DonnaMae called me and asked me if I wanted to help her direct this play,” Trevino said.
“It is much better than anything I’ve ever done in my life.”
Both directors said the opportunity to work with their cast has been a phenomenal experience.
“These people are amazing,” Harper said.
“We have such a family atmosphere here. And our cast get along so well. No one complains. No one whines. We just have a great group of people.”
And the cast is packed with talent.
Sarah Condie stars as Maria. She is governess to the Von Trapp children, who consist of Lauren Cook, as Gretl, Brigham Bodily as Marta, Caden Seely, who is Kurt, Ceci Faux, as Luisa, Cody Hansen as Frederich, and Kyrstin Tindall as Leisel.
Burton Anderson stars as Captain Von Trapp, with Megi Jones as Baroness Schrader. The Mother Superior is played by Barbara Sorensen, with MaKyla Barras, Kayla Lloyd, and Donn Peacock as some of the nuns.
Michael James is Max and Casey Tindall is Rolf.
In addition, there are dozens of other performers involved in this classic production.
“We really feel our audiences will be in for a rare treat,” Trevino said.
“We have been able to put together such a group of talented people and they are so into our production. It is going to be a great show and I’m certain people will leave with a good feeling.
Trevino praised the backstage helpers as well.
“We have more than a dozen people who have been so instrumental in putting this show together. We have a great group doing costumes, make-up and scenery and they are all new,” Harper said.
“It’s been so great.”
The directors said casting the snow is probably the hardest part of everything they have done.
“We had 69 people try out for the show and it was really hard to pick who we would use,” Trevino said.
“We worked hard to put together a cast that truly molded into a family.”
